Stephen Bulmer joins as new Cookery School Chef Director

Swinton Park has announced today that Stephen Bulmer will be joining them in the New Year as Chef Director at the acclaimed Swinton Park Cookery School.

Stephen Bulmer has over 20 years’ experience at Michelin level restaurants throughout Europe, including several years as a senior chef de cuisine at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. Ever keen to broaden his knowledge further, he has mastered new skills and styles of cooking throughout his career, cooking Italian cuisine at Zafferano, Knightsbridge; Thai cuisine at Nahm, London and Japanese cuisine at Nobu, London.

Stephen rose to prominence early in his career, reaching the national finals of the Young Chef of the Year in 1992 and 1993 and the semi-finals of the Roux-brothers scholarship competition. Since then he has appeared on various TV programmes including Ready, Steady, Cook and Total Fishing.

He is also is widely acknowledged to be one the leading cookery school tutors in the UK, having been Chef Director of the Raymond Blanc Cookery School for 6 years and also running his own school at Brook Hall in Buckinghamshire. He combines his top-level cookery skills with a gregarious personality, a winning combination – ’He is one of my most experienced chefs and a great craftsman – his enthusiasm is completely infectious’, commented Raymond Blanc.

Whilst his cooking has taken him all over the world, Stephen actually hails from Yorkshire and is returning to his roots. He spent his childhood in the North Yorkshire Moors and started cooking at The Goathland Hotel before going on to train at the The Box Tree in Ilkley. “Whilst I have been away from Yorkshire for many years, it still feels like I am coming home”, commented Stephen, “I am thrilled to be joining the Swinton Park Cookery School and am very excited about all the new courses and developments we have planned for it.” The 2013 Cookery Course programme will be announced shortly – new themes and styles of cooking will include Flavours of the Orient, Regional French Cuisine and The Ultimate Sunday Lunch.

Notes for the Editor :

  1. Swinton Park is an award winning luxury castle hotel set in 200 acres of landscaped parkland in the Yorkshire Dales.
  2. The cookery school is in the adjoining Georgian stables and opened in 2003. Day, weekend and evening courses based on a wide range of various cooking themes run throughout the year.
  3. The Swinton Park Cookery School is a finalist in The British Cookery School Awards 2012 for Best Small Cookery School category, the winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on the 13th November.
  4. A new retail range of Swinton Estate food products – Chef’s Kitchen – was launched in 2012 and will continue to expand with new products to be launched by Stephen shortly.
  5. Gilly Robinson currently runs the Children’s and Family courses at the school and her role with expand in 2013 with an expanded range of Home Cooking courses.
  6. The current Cookery School Head Chef John Rogers and guest celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager will be leaving the school at the end of the year to embark on a new venture in Kent. Rosemary will continue to teach day courses at Swinton Park in 2013 as guest celebrity chef.
