British Cookery School Awards finalists announced!
Swinton Park Cookery School shortlisted for top industry award
Swinton Park Cookery School based in Masham, North Yorkshire has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Best Small Cookery School’ category of the 2013 British Cookery School Awards, which is headline sponsored by Kenwood.
With more than 400 cookery schools now operating across the county, the British Cookery School Awards 2013 honour excellent cookery schools that go above and beyond to deliver a top notch cookery school experience. Launched in July 2012, the awards celebrate the important role that cookery schools play in driving Britain’s passion for cooking good, homemade food.
Swinton Park Cookery School is located on the Swinton Estate, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Housed in the ground floor of the converted Georgian stable wing, the school is adjacent to the hotel and re-opened at the end of August 2013 following an extensive refurbishment to include state of the art Gaggenau appliances and now offers six workstations for up to 12 guests to use in pairs and learn new skills, led by charismatic Chef Director Stephen Bulmer – previously of the Raymond Blanc Cookery School at Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. Swinton Park Cookery School also boasts a highly qualified team of guest chefs with varied expertise.
Courses are aimed at food enthusiasts and home-cooks wanting to develop their existing culinary skills as well as professional cooks and even children and teenagers. Courses include ‘Modern British’, ‘Game’, ‘Fish & Shellfish’, ‘Stocks and Sauces’ and ‘Curry Masterclasses’. Each course uses locally sourced ingredients and fresh produce from both the Swinton Park Estate and the hotel’s four acre walled garden, which houses over 60 varieties of seasonal fruit and vegetables.
Swinton Park is up against stiff competition from other schools across the country. Entrants to the Best Small category had to demonstrate why their school is the best at its particular area of expertise and how they differentiate themselves from competitors.
The BCSA categories honour feats from the biggest to the smallest cookery schools across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, celebrating the achievements of whole schools to individual star tutors and unsung heroes. Finalists have been chosen in the following categories:
- Best English Cookery School
- Best Scottish Cookery School
- Best Welsh Cookery School

- Best Small Cookery School
- Best Large Professional Cookery School

The judges have been impressed with the consistently high standard across categories and cookery schools. Head judge Nigel Barden said:
“It was really gratifying to be involved with the inaugural awards last year, which attracted a magnificent number of entries, who proved to be amazingly diverse. At the awards evening it was easy to see how much it meant to the recipients, that all their hard graft and endeavour had been so appreciated, not just by their students but also those in the food business”.
The finalists were officially announced on 3rd October on the British Cookery School awards website (www.britishcookeryschoolawards.co.uk) and the winners will be revealed in a London awards ceremony on Monday 11th November at Vintners’ Hall.
