Downton at Swinton

Downton at Swinton

The Downton Experience at Swinton Park

Live like Lord & Lady Grantham for a weekend at an ancestral Yorkshire castle, hosted by Lord and Lady Masham.

6-8th March, 16 – 18th October 2015

Experience the genuine country house party weekend, reflecting those portrayed in Downton Abbey, which has taken place throughout the history of Swinton Park. Hosted by Lord and Lady Masham, whose family have owned the Swinton Estate since the 1860’s, the weekend is filled, in true traditional country house party style, with a variety of country pursuits and activities from which to choose. Worlds away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, yet only a couple of hours* from London by train…

Programme of Events

Arrive for check in from 3pm. Your car will be valet parked and bags delivered to your room. Alternatively, if you would prefer to travel by train, we can arrange chauffeur-driven collection from the station.

A Musical Soirée and Aristocratic Dinner

House parties were characterised by their glittering evening events. Our Downton weekend will commence with Champagne and canapés on Friday night, followed by an informal musical soirée and gourmet buffet supper.

On Saturday night, black tie and posh frocks – or period costume if you prefer – are the order of the day. Pre-dinner drinks will be served to the accompaniment of a harpist, after which guests will be taken through to the Samuel’s for a glittering long-table banquet, hosted by Lord and Lady Masham. The gourmet menu will feature ingredients sourced from the Estate, such as venison and pheasant, with wines selected to complement each course.

After Dinner Dancing, Music and Games

The evening’s entertainment doesn’t stop with dinner. Each evening after dinner you can enjoy coffee and order liqueurs in the Drawing Room, as well as playing cards, or a game of billiards or snooker.

On Saturday evening, the Library will be filled with music after dinner, as Lord and Lady Masham lead the party in traditional Scottish reeling.

Country Pursuits and Cosseted Luxury:

House guests have plenty of time on Saturday and Sunday to take full advantage of the activities the Swinton Estate has to offer. Individual bookings can be made for clay shooting, fishing, riding and golf, or you may prefer to join one of the optional excursions we have arranged:

  • A moorland drive to the Bothy Hut for coffee, with optional return walk
  • A private VIP tour of Newby Hall, Lord Grantham’s home in the 1800s and closely linked to the Downton story
  • A ‘safari’ drive into the Parkland with the Estate Ranger to see the fallow deer with coffee served at the Deerhouse
  • A chauffeur-driven tour of the Swinton Estate and the Yorkshire Dales

Picnics can be ordered on Saturday, so you can stay out all day without having to worry about where to eat. Alternatively you may prefer to stay in the house, enjoying spa treatments or some relaxation time in our exclusive-use spa area with cedar hot tub and sauna – or later next year, our new spa facility.

Morning coffee will be served prior to departure on Sunday, with lunch in Samuel’s restaurant an optional addition to the programme.

From £850 per room.
