Halloween Trail & Fright Night

Halloween Nature Trail & Afternoon Tea

Trail: 11am – 3pm, Afternoon Tea: 12 noon – 5pm

Enjoy some half term fun on our Halloween Nature Trail through the Parkland, full of spooks and surprises, with a quiz to answer as you go around. Dressing up welcome!

£4 per person, including quiz and spooky gift. (Under 2 years half price)

Fright Night:

Beware the ‘real’ spirits and ghouls wailing to jump out at you on our torchlit Halloween woodland walk (NOT recommended for those under 5 years). Recover afterwards with refreshments on sale in The Library.

Wear warm clothes and wellingtons. Dressing up welcome…

Thursday 13th August

Spend a day in the parkland learning how to hunt with Birds of Prey and ferrets, forage for edible wild ingredients, and to build a fire and enjoy a delicious meal (using ingredients sourced from the day’s hunting and foraging) which is served in the deerhouse. The day is spent with our falconer Sophie Abbott and wild food expert Chris Bax, and promises to appeal to anyone with an interest in countryside skills and who enjoys getting back to nature!

£95 per person. The day starts at 9.15am and ends after lunch which is served at 2.15pm. The entire day is spent outdoors so warm outdoor clothing and footwear is advisable.

Join Chris Bax, as recently seen on Blue Peter, for a two hour session of foraging for wild food and learning woodland and survival skills in the woods. Each session lasts two hours, and ends with a picnic which parents are welcome to join.

Depending on the ages and any particular requirements, the activities involved would include some of the following :

Our charming, rustic Deerhouse is the perfect setting for dinner on a summer’s evening. This year, on selected Saturday evenings, we will serving a five-course dinner menu created by Samuel’s head chef Simon Crannage, featuring seasonal ingredients from the Estate and Walled Garden. Enjoy an aperitif as you watch the sun go down over the Parkland, then join the party for delightful alfresco dinner in the Deerhouse, served at a single long table.

Warmed by braziers, under a canopy of starlight, what better way to enjoy a beautiful summer’s evening?


Baked breads

Chilled gazpacho with Picual olive oil


Cedar plank-smoked trout,
dill and shallot dressing, pickle of vegetables


Chilli and coriander-marinated poussin

Chipotle-glazed Swinton pork steak

Slow-smoked beef and tomato sausage

Charred peppers and aubergine couscous

Garlic and mustard-dressed cos lettuce

Hazelnut and red cabbage slaw


Trio of local cheeses,
traditional garnish, oat biscuits


Baked banana on the grill
dark rum, cane sugar

Confit of pineapple from the grill

Special dietary needs can usually be accommodated
but must be advised at time of booking

£45 per person including aperitif, coffee and transport between the hotel and the Deerhouse.

Guests will all be seated together at a single, large table. Warm clothing and footwear highly recommended, as the evening turns cool after sunset. This is a rustic experience, with uneven ground surrounding the Deerhouse – please take care on arrival and departure. In the event of very bad weather the event will be cancelled.


Cook and Lunch

At lunch we offer a Barbecue Cook and Lunch course, where guests from each party can help grill lunch, under the careful tuition of Cookery School chef director Stephen Bulmer.

Non-cooking guests and children are also welcome. Enjoy a stroll in the grounds or watch the cooks, before joining them for lunch.

£40 per person – one hour of barbecue cookery tuition and lunch.
£25 per person – adult non-cooking lunch guest, £15 – child’s lunch.(includes a glass of Pimms or soft drink on arrival)


Barbecue Cookery Course

11th June, 2nd July, 30th July, 20th August

A full day Barbecue Cookery Course that covers the making of marinades, rubs and accompaniments, in addition to grill skills and other barbecue-based cookery methods.

£130 per person

Book Now… for our wonderful events later this year. Live like a Lord and Lady at our Downton at Swinton weekend, or indulge in an extravaganza of fine food and wine at our Gourmet Weekends. We also have just a few rooms still available for our Christmas and New Year house parties.

Looking Ahead… Work has commenced on our Country Club and Spa, which will include an indoor swimming pool with full spa and fitness facilities, as well as a 40-seat conservatory restaurant, coffee shop and Swinton Estate shop. Please see our press release for more information.
