Walking in the parkland at Swinton Park

Walking

The 200 acres of parkland that surround Swinton Park consists of a chain of five lakes, landscaped during the 17th century, with a walking trail throughout.

The complete circuit, which passes through the steep ravine at Quarry Gill, can take up to 2 ½ hours to complete. The woodland is at its most dramatic during April/May with the daffodils, in June when the azaleas and rhododendrons bloom and in September/October with the autumn colours.

Within the parkland there are also open lawns around the hotel, including a cricket pitch for visiting teams, an orangery, and shrubbery. Behind the orangery there is a four acre walled garden which has been recently restored by Susan Cunliffe-Lister (Country Life Gardener of the Year 2001), and now produces flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables for the hotel.

Further afield, guests can follow the River Burn to where it joins the River Ure and walk into the charming market town of Masham. More challenging walks include a trip to the Druids Temple, up on the moorland edge, or a circuit above the estate reservoirs and over into Nidderdale.

Walking maps are available for guests (both resident and day visitors) at the hotel reception.

The garden furniture is out and soon it will be time for afternoon teas on the lawn and evening drinks on the terrace at sunset. English summertime at it’s best.
