Swinton Park has always been a family home, and since its conversion into a hotel the Cunliffe-Lister family have been careful to retain its comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.
The sense of space at Swinton Park is hard to match, both in terms of the extravagantly large bedrooms and also the extensive grounds. With a playroom full of toys including an XBox (which converts into a private cinema) and a boot room full of kites, bikes and other outdoor games, there is no shortage of entertainment. There is also an outdoor play area and hours of walking in the parkland.
A particular attraction is the Bird of Prey Centre in the Aviary near the Walled Garden. The morning flying display is always popular, and children can also handle and fly a bird on a Hawk Walk or as part of an Owl Experience display (those aged 11 years and younger must have adult supervision for these). For those visting in the October Half Term, the Halloween Owl Spectacular with treasure hunts and flying displays is a must! Further details are at our Things to Do section. Please see our Falconry page if you would like more information about the birds or if you would like to book a flying experience.
For those wanting to venture further afield, there is a highly imaginative fantasy garden at The Forbidden Corner, and also a theme park at Lightwater Valley.
For the real tinies, we have cots, highchairs, bottle warmers and baby listening/baby sitting and a goody bag including baby bathtime products, teddy bear, bibs, spoons and wipes. We also offer baby massage courses by our trained therapists, where the mother is given instruction on how to massage baby, learning how to provide relief from ailments such as colic, wind, sleeplessness and restlessness.
We also have a licence for hosting Baby Naming Ceremonies at the hotel, so please ask Jo Lapham (01765 680954 or by email) if this is something that you would like to know more about.
For the older children we have sofa beds and z-beds, who also get their own (more grown up!) goody bags.
All of our 30 bedrooms have room for a cot, with space for a z-bed or another cot in most of our rooms, and all four suites have sofa-beds. For a real fairytale experience try the Turret suite set on three circular floors!
Children can learn to cook at the cookery school at Swinton Park, with courses running every half term during 2008. For further details please see the cookery school section of our website.
Look out for our Countryside Activity Days for Children which we run here in the parkland during the summer months. This is a day for children to really get out into the great outdoors and learn about the environment and world we live in. Weather permitting, the day is spent entirely outdoors in the 200 acres of parkland that surround the hotel. A typical day would start with a walk to Home Lake to feed the ducks, see the geese and goslings, and walk up to the paddock to see the deer and their new fawns. There would then follow a nature trail, starting up in the woodland at Coffin Pond, identifying insects, birds, trees and wildflowers, and this then leads in to a treasure hunt. A picnic lunch in the gardens follows, with some playtime in our outdoor play area which has swings, a slide and a castle play house. The afternoon is spent with a visit to the four acre walled garden, where over 62 varieties of fruit, herbs and vegetables are grown, children will be allowed to pick their own raspberries or strawberries for pudding! The day then culminates with a 30 minute display at our new Birds of Prey centre, with owls, falcons and hawks for children to watch and handle. In the event of bad weather we have an alternative schedule of craft based activities which we would run in the indoor play area at the hotel. Full details of dates and prices are given at our Things to Do section.
Children aged 8 and over are welcome to eat from the restaurant menu in Samuel’s. There is also a children’s menu, which can be served as room service or in one of the ground floor public rooms. We are always very happy to puree, blend or warm up food, or to cater for any special requests for those with particular tastes.
