| Walking
and Gardens
There is a wide range of walking available at the hotel, both within the 200 acres of walled parkland, and also on the 20,000 acre family estate which stretches from the River Ure in Wensleydale up onto the moorland Dales which borders the National Park. The parkland consists of a chain of five lakes, landscaped during the 17th century, with a walking trail throughout. The complete circuit, which passes through the steep ravine at Quarry Gill, can take up to 2 ½ hours to complete. The woodland is at its most dramatic during April/May with the daffodils, in June during the azaleas and rhododendron blooms, and in September/October with the autumn colours. Within the parkland there are also open lawns around the hotel, including a cricket pitch for visiting teams, an orangery, and shrubbery. Behind the orangery there is a four acre walled garden which has been recently restored by Susan Cunliffe-Lister (Country Life Gardener of the Year 2001), and now produces flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables for the hotel. Further afield, guests can follow the River Burn to where it joins the River Ure and walk into the charming market town of Masham. More challenging walks include a trip to the Druids Temple, up on the moorland edge, or a circuit above the estate reservoirs and over into Nidderdale.
