Fishing

A wide range of fishing is available on the Swinton Estate which stretches from the river valley in Wensleydale up onto the moorland Dales.

A 2 mile stretch on the River Ure can be fished for wild brown trout and grayling (and recently salmon have also returned to the river), and Leighton Reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout.

The five lakes in the parkland are home to pike, tench and perch.

River fly fishing : £35 per day (reduced to £30 per rod for groups of 4 or more)
Reservoir fishing : £21 per day
Coarse fishing : no charge

The Orvis Rod Room at the hotel is well equipped with Orvis fly rods and flies, jackets, waders, coarse rods – and a drying cupboard for those caught out in the elements! A refundable deposit of £50 applies for use of the rods.

The fishing season on the river is April to September for brown trout, June to March for grayling and the salmon run in mid autumn. A catch and return policy applies to all river fish.

Leighton Reservoir is open from May to October.

The coarse fishing months are June to March.

Ghillies are available by arrangement, who need to be booked in advance. 2011 Rates per person range from £70 to £115 for a half day, and £130 to £185 for a full day, depending on availability. Fishing (subject to the season) is available at all times.

Guests are responsible for organising their own fishing licences. These can be paid for on an annual or daily basis, via the internet or at a Post Office.
