New Lights Exhibition
New Lights Art Exhibition
17th June – 4th July
Closed Saturday 29th June
Swinton Park is hosting an art exhibition in aid of New Lights , a charity which provides a springboard for young Northern artists, with work from the acclaimed Norman Ackroyd C.B.E., Emerson Mayes, James Naughton, Anja Percival and Paul Lewin, with all the artists kindly agreeing to donate 35% of all sales to New Lights.
During the course of the exhibition, an evening of ‘Fine Art & Fine Music’ will be held on 27th June 2013 where there will be an opportunity to enjoy not only the fabulous art on show, but to listen to the wonderful music of The Yorkshire Decibelles. This choir, formed only a year ago by one of the founders of the internationally-acclaimed Cambridge Chamber Consort, has already developed a reputation for excellence. They have entertained audiences at Holy Rood House, Ripon Cathedral and many places besides. Described as “honey-tongued”, “mellifluous” and “simply excellent” in reviews, they are certain to grace the evening with their delightful voices. A special exhibition menu is available for guests dining in Samuel’s restaurant on the evening. The Fine Art & Fine Music evening is by invitation and tickets cost £10 – please contact New Lights if you would like to attend.
If you would like to visit the exhibition, it is open to the public and hotel guests every day apart from on Saturday 29th June. Please book in advance if you would like to enjoy lunch, afternoon tea or dinner at the hotel.
Norman Ackroyd C.B.E.
Norman Ackroyd studied at Leeds College of Art from 1956 to 1961, and subsequently at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1961 to 1964. He has had many solo exhibitions, both in Britain and internationally; public commissions include etched metal panels for the British Embassy in Moscow, Lloyds Bank, British Airways and Cambridge University. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1991, and awarded a C.B.E. for services to engraving in 2007.
Emerson Mayes is a Yorkshire born artist who has experienced that rarest of things: success – both critical and commercial – since the beginning of his career as an artist. From the day he graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1994, he has enjoyed a growing reputation for a fresh, honest and uncontrived approach to his work. Winning the Young Artist of the Year Award in 1995 was the first of a number of major awards he has received. This together with successful shows across the country and in London has resulted in Emerson having an ever-growing number of loyal collectors, both private and corporate, most recently The House of Lords purchased three pieces for their Permanent Collection.
Anja Percival is a printmaker who was born in Durham. After initially pursuing a scientific career, Anja then studied Fine Art at Falmouth College of Arts, where she discovered her love for printmaking. Between 2005 and 2009 she spent the majority of her time working at several different printmaking workshops in Copenhagen and Odense, but in December 2009, she relocated back to the North East, and now predominantly works from her studio in Fowlers Yard, Durham. She is also a member of Northern Print Studio in Newcastle, and maintains strong links with Fyns Printmaking Workshop in Odense.
James Naughton is one of the UK’s leading contemporary landscape painters and has exhibited extensively in London and across the country. James Naughton pursued his childhood love of art to achieve a first class honours degree from the Metropolitan University of Leeds in 1994, and since then has enjoyed an extraordinary career and has become one of Britain’s most accomplished and sought after landscape painters. It is often said that a James Naughton painting evokes an emotional experience, sometimes even a spiritual one, but he prefers not to attach definitive meanings to his work, preferring his painting to speak for itself and allowing the individual viewer his or her own personal dialogue with the image.
Paul Lewin was born in Manchester in 1967. He studied at Stockport College and went on to complete a BA (hons) degree in Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic in 1989. A fluent “en plein air” painter, his work has developed in response to the characteristic coastal fringes of the peninsular. In exploring its rugged coastlines and wild interiors of moorland and valleys, the resulting works evoke a strong sense of atmosphere, through a sensitivity to the changing light and weather conditions. His paintings can be found in collections throughout the UK, Germany, Mexico, USA, Australia and the Far East. One recent commission includes six works for Cunard to be hung in their new cruise liner Queen Mary II, launched in 2004.
