Children’s & Teenagers’ Cookery Courses

Children’s Cookery Courses

Our Children’s Cookery courses are taught by Maggie Harvey who has spent the whole of her career teaching cookery to children and teenagers, running courses for the youngest of ages with the most basic skills, right up to older and more intensive levels.

Children’s classes aim to help budding chefs master basic skills, encouraging them to enjoy and experiment with food in a friendly and fun environment. All children will take home an apron and recipe card at the end of each course.

The courses available are as follows :

Mini-Chefs – Aimed at budding young chefs, aged 6-9 years, who can enjoy lots of hands on experience and make some simple items using key kitchen skills. A half day session, which includes a goody bag to take home.

Basics for Beginners – For children aged 10 – 14 years. Designed to build confidence in the kitchen, learning techniques children can try at home including bread making and basic knife skills. Children will eat what they make during the course.

Confident Cook - For children aged 10 – 14yrs, who have been on a Basics for Beginners course before, or who have lots of experience in the kitchen and are able to cook with confidence, managing simple tasks unsupervised. This course will inspire a young chef to experiment with more styles and themes of cooking, covering some more complicated techniques. Children will eat what they make during the course.

Please click Children’s Cookery Courses for further information and forthcoming dates.

Children’s Parties and Private Bookings

If the scheduled dates don’t suit you or if you would like Maggie all to yourself, Maggie can run a private children’s cookery course for up to ten children at a time. This can include adults if they would like the opportunity to cook alongside their children. For more details, please call 01796 680969 or email cookeryschool@swintonpark.com.

Life skills for Teenagers

Older teenagers with busy lifestyles, wanting food at different times and those leaving home to go to college or university also need to learn the essentials of cooking and meal planning. Maggie Harvey has two full day courses for Teenagers, to suit differing levels of ability:

Basic Skills – teaches the core cookery techniques that are key life skills, such as grilling and frying a piece of meat or fish, making mince-based dishes and cooking a roast dinner.

Intermediate – expands the repertoire of more experienced teenage cooks, as Maggie leads them through the preparation of a dinner party menu.

Teenage Bootcamp
This is a two-day course for teenagers to provide total immersion in cookery skills. Starting from scratch, with lots of hands-on cooking, this course will equip them with the basic knowledge to cook meals for themselves.
